PART-I

Before you read

There are many reasons why children have to work. बच्चों को काम क्यों करना पड़ता है, इसके कई कारण हैं। Some help their family make a livelihood. कुछ अपने परिवार की आजीविका चलाने में मदद करते हैं। Others, who run away from unhappy homes, need to support themselves. दूसरे, जो दुखी घरों से भागकर आते हैं, उन्हें खुद का भरण-पोषण करना पड़ता है। Children who have to work can’t go to school and play like other children of their age. जिन बच्चों को काम करना पड़ता है, वे अपनी उम्र के दूसरे बच्चों की तरह स्कूल नहीं जा पाते और खेल नहीं पाते।

Ø  Velu, an eleven-year old boy, runs away from home. वेलु, एक ग्यारह वर्षीय लड़का, घर से भाग जाता है।

Ø  He wanders around for hours before getting on a train to Chennai without a ticket. वह बिना टिकट के चेन्नई जाने वाली ट्रेन पर चढ़ने से पहले घंटों इधर-उधर भटकता रहता है।

Ø  Tired and hungry, he doesn’t know where to go when a stranger at the station shouts a word of welcome. थका हुआ और भूखा, वह नहीं जानता कि कहाँ जाए जब स्टेशन पर एक अजनबी उसका स्वागत करता है।

WHEN the Kanyakumari Express pulled in at Chennai Central, it took Velu some time to get off. जब कन्याकुमारी एक्सप्रेस चेन्नई सेंट्रल पर रुकी, तो वेलु को उतरने में कुछ समय लगा। When he finally stood on the platform, his legs felt wobbly, as if he was still on a moving train. जब वह आखिरकार प्लेटफ़ॉर्म पर खड़ा हुआ, तो उसके पैर लड़खड़ा रहे थे, मानो वह अभी भी चलती ट्रेन में हो। “Oy, out of the way!” A porter went by with a loaded trolley. Velu jumped aside. "अरे, रास्ते से हट जाओ!” एक कुली भरी हुई ट्रॉली लेकर वहाँ से गुज़रा। वेलु एक तरफ़ कूद गया।

 

He sat on a bench on the platform, putting his small bundle down. वह प्लेटफॉर्म पर एक बेंच पर बैठ गया, अपना छोटा सा बंडल नीचे रख दिया। In all his eleven years, he had never seen so many people, except once a year at the fair in his village. अपने ग्यारह सालों में, उसने कभी इतने सारे लोगों को नहीं देखा था, सिवाय एक साल में एक बार अपने गांव में मेले में। People walked by, bumping into him with their suitcases. लोग अपने सूटकेस लेकर उसके पास से गुज़रते थे, टकराते थे। A voice announced something on a loudspeaker. लाउडस्पीकर पर एक आवाज़ ने कुछ घोषणा की। Near him a group of people sat on their luggage, उसके पास लोगों का एक समूह अपने सामान पर बैठा था, looking at a TV hanging from the roof. छत से लटके टीवी को देख रहा था।  The noise was terrible.शोर भयानक था।

 

Velu put his head down on his knees, वेलू ने अपना सिर घुटनों पर टिका लिया, feeling miserable and exhausted. दुखी और थका हुआ महसूस कर रहा था। He had run away from his village two days ago. वह दो दिन पहले अपने गांव से भाग गया था। For two days he had eaten nothing but some peanuts and a piece of jaggery. दो दिनों तक उसने मूंगफली और गुड़ के एक टुकड़े के अलावा कुछ नहीं खाया था। In his bundle he carried a shirt, a towel and a comb. अपने बंडल में उसने एक शर्ट, एक तौलिया और एक कंघी रखी थी। He had walked for most of the first day to Kanur वह पहले दिन ज्यादातर कानुर तक पैदल चला था and then got on the train to Chennai. और फिर चेन्नई जाने वाली ट्रेन में चढ़ गया था। Velu had no money for a ticket . वेलू के पास टिकट के लिए पैसे नहीं थे, but luckily the ticket collector didn’t come to the unreserved compartment लेकिन सौभाग्य से टिकट कलेक्टर अनारक्षित डिब्बे में नहीं आया था। He had tried to sleep on the floor near the door. उसने दरवाजे के पास फर्श पर सोने की कोशिश की थी। A group of men next to him had played cards and shouted all night. उसके बगल में पुरुषों का एक समूह पूरी रात ताश खेलता और चिल्लाता रहा था।

“Aiy! What, new to town eh?” called out a rough voice. "अईय! क्या, शहर में नए हो ना?" एक कर्कश आवाज़ ने पुकारा।

Velu opened his eyes. वेलू ने अपनी आँखें खोलीं। There were a lot of people standing around, आस-पास बहुत सारे लोग खड़े थे, but nobody was looking at him. “Here! Aiy!” लेकिन कोई भी उसकी तरफ़ नहीं देख रहा था। "यहाँ! ऐय!"

He turned around. वह पलटा। Behind him was a girl around his own age, wearing a long banian that came down to her knees. ? उसके पीछे उसकी ही उम्र की एक लड़की खड़ी थी, जो घुटनों तक लंबी बनियान पहने हुए थी। Her hair was stiff and brownish and she had a huge sack on one shoulder. उसके बाल रूखे और भूरे थे और उसके एक कंधे पर एक बहुत बड़ी बोरी थी। She was picking up dirty plastic cups from the floor and stuffing them into her sack. वह फर्श से गंदे प्लास्टिक के कप उठा रही थी और उन्हें अपनी बोरी में भर रही थी। Why is she calling me, thought Velu. And why is a girl wearing a banian वह मुझे क्यों बुला रही है, वेलू ने सोचा। और एक लड़की बनियान क्यों पहन रही है?

“No need to stare stupidly. What’s your name?” "बेवकूफी से घूरने की ज़रूरत नहीं है। तुम्हारा नाम क्या है?"

“Velu,” muttered Velu, looking away. "वेलु," वेलु ने दूर देखते हुए बुदबुदाया।

“So Mr Velu,” said the girl, looking at his bundle. "तो मिस्टर वेलु," लड़की ने उसकी गठरी को देखते हुए कहा।  “Run away from home?” "घर से भाग गए?"

Velu didn’t answer. वेलू ने कोई जवाब नहीं दिया। He didn’t want to tell some strange girl what he had done. वह किसी अनजान लड़की को यह नहीं बताना चाहता था कि उसने क्या किया है। He had run away because he couldn’t stand his father beating him for one more day. वह भाग गया था क्योंकि वह अपने पिता की पिटाई को एक दिन और बर्दाश्त नहीं कर सकता था। His father would snatch away all the money Velu and his sisters earned and spend it on drink. उसके पिता वेलू और उसकी बहनों की कमाई छीनकर शराब पर उड़ा देते थे।

 

“Don’t think I don’t know.”ऐसा मत सोचो कि मैं नहीं जानता। This place is full of children like you. यह जगह तुम्हारे जैसे बच्चों से भरी पड़ी है। So what are you going to do here? तो तुम यहाँ क्या करने जा रहे हो? Become rich?” अमीर बनोगे?"

She sat down next to him. Velu shifted away slightly. वह उसके पास बैठ गई। वेलु थोड़ा सा दूर चला गया।

He felt hunger pinching him and pressed his stomach with a grimace. उसे भूख का एहसास हुआ और उसने मुंह बनाते हुए अपना पेट दबाया। “Hungry?” asked the girl. “भूख लगी है?" लड़की ने पूछा। “You won’t get food by sitting here glumly, making faces. "यहाँ उदास होकर बैठे रहने और मुंह बनाते रहने से तुम्हें खाना नहीं मिलेगा। I can find some if you want.” अगर तुम चाहो तो मैं कुछ ला सकती हूँ।"

She picked up her sack and started to walk away. उसने अपना बोरा उठाया और चलने लगी। Velu stayed on the bench. वेलू बेंच पर ही बैठा रहा। What should he do? उसे क्या करना चाहिए? Should he follow this girl? क्या उसे इस लड़की का पीछा करना चाहिए? Where was she going to take him? वह उसे कहाँ ले जाने वाली थी? She was disappearing into the crowd, so he had to make up his mind quickly. वह भीड़ में गायब हो रही थी, इसलिए उसे जल्दी से अपना मन बनाना पड़ा। Alright, he decided. ठीक है, उसने फैसला किया। Anyway I have no idea where to go. वैसे भी मुझे नहीं पता कि कहाँ जाना है। He jumped up and ran after her. वह उछलकर उसके पीछे भागा। She wasn’t even looking back to see where he was. वह यह देखने के लिए भी पीछे मुड़कर नहीं देख रही थी कि वह कहाँ है।

PART-II   CHILDREN AT WORK

Ø Velu follows his friend through the crowded streets to a big building. वेलु अपने दोस्त का पीछा करते हुए भीड़ भरी सड़कों से होते हुए एक बड़ी इमारत तक पहुँचता है।

Ø Behind the building, there is a big garbage bin.  इमारत के पीछे एक बड़ा कचरादान है।

Ø Velu wonders why they are there at all. वेलु को आश्चर्य होता है कि वे वहाँ क्यों हैं?

He caught up with the girl as she was leaving the station. . वह स्टेशन से बाहर निकलते समय लड़की के पास पहुँचा। When they got to the road, Velu found that the vehicles kept coming and never stopped for anyone. जब वे सड़क पर पहुँचे, तो वेलू ने पाया कि गाड़ियाँ आती रहीं और किसी के लिए रुकी ही नहीं। Smoke and dust flew at him from all sides, making his head spin. चारों तरफ से धुआँ और धूल उड़ रही थी, जिससे उसका सिर चकरा रहा थाThey had to wait for a long time before they could find a gap to run through. उन्हें भागने के लिए जगह ढूँढ़ने से पहले बहुत देर तक इंतज़ार करना पड़ा। Velu kept hesitating and the girl finally dragged him to the other side. वेलू हिचकिचाता रहा और लड़की ने आखिरकार उसे दूसरी तरफ खींच लिया।

“What do you think you’re doing?” तुम्हें क्या लगता है कि तुम क्या कर रहे हो?Grazing cows? गाय चरा रहे हो? If you stand around in the middle of the road like that, you’ll be chutney.” अगर तुम इस तरह सड़क के बीच में खड़े रहोगे, तो तुम चटनी बन जाओगे।"

 Velu’s heart was still beating fast. वेलू का दिल अभी भी तेजी से धड़क रहा था। He looked back at Central Station and the traffic speeding by. उसने सेंट्रल स्टेशन और तेजी से गुजर रहे ट्रैफिक को देखा। How had they managed to come through that? वे वहां से कैसे निकल पाए? They walked along the side of the road under some huge signboards. वे सड़क के किनारे कुछ बड़े साइनबोर्ड के नीचे चले गए। Velu looked up at the pictures: banians, car tyres, pens, a woman holding a box. वेलू ने तस्वीरों की तरफ देखाः बनियान, कार के टायर, कलम, एक महिला एक बक्सा पकड़े हुए। The writing was all in English, so he didn’t know what it meant. लिखावट सब अंग्रेजी में थी, इसलिए उसे नहीं पता था कि इसका क्या मतलब है।

The girl turned onto a wide bridge and walked up. लड़की एक चौड़े पुल पर मुड़ी और ऊपर चली गई। Velu stopped and peeped over the railing. वेलू रुक गया और रेलिंग के ऊपर से झाँका। Under him, the road ran into the city. उसके नीचे, सड़क शहर में जाती थी। In the distance he could see huge buildings and towers and more roads. दूरी पर उसे बड़ी-बड़ी इमारतें और टावर और और भी सड़कें दिखाई दे रही थीं।

“See that big building with the wall around it? If you’re not careful, you’ll soon be counting bars there.” The girl grinned and pointed at a huge building. "वह बड़ी इमारत जिसके चारों ओर दीवार है, देख रहे हो? अगर तुम सावधान नहीं रहे, तो जल्दी ही तुम वहाँ सलाखों की गिनती करते रह जाओगे।" लड़की मुस्कुराई और एक बड़ी इमारत की ओर इशारा किया।

Velu squinted and read the Tamil sign, Central Jail. वेलु ने आँखें सिकोड़कर तमिल में लिखा 'सेंट्रल जेल' पढ़ा।

 “Why? I haven’t done anything wrong.” "क्यों? मैंने कुछ गलत नहीं किया है।"

“You don’t have to do anything. Just don’t get caught, that’s all.” "तुम्हें कुछ भी करने की ज़रूरत नहीं है। बस पकड़े मत जाना, बस इतना ही।"

What she means, Velu wondered. वेलू ने सोचा, उसका क्या मतलब है। Meanwhile the girl was already heading down the bridge with the sack on her shoulder. इस बीच लड़की कंधे पर बोरी रखे पुल से नीचे जा चुकी थी। What was in it?  उसमें क्या था? He had seen her putting plastic cups into it at the stationउसने उसे स्टेशन पर उसमें प्लास्टिक के कप डालते देखा था।

“What are you carrying in that bag?” "तुम उस बैग में क्या ले जा रहे हो?"

“Things. Bottles, paper.” "चीजें। बोतलें, कागज़।"

Velu wondered what she was doing with them, वेलु को आश्चर्य हुआ कि वह उनके साथ क्या कर रही थी, but he felt shy to ask any more questions. लेकिन उसे और अधिक प्रश्न पूछने में शर्म महसूस हुई।

 

 It was still morning but the sun blasted down on the tar and Velu’s bare feet burned. अभी भी सुबह थी लेकिन सूरज की रोशनी तारकोल पर पड़ रही थी और वेलू के नंगे पैर जल रहे थे। It was not like walking on a mud road. यह मिट्टी की सड़क पर चलने जैसा नहीं था। He was soaked with sweat. वह पसीने से लथपथ था। He tried hard to walk in the shade and keep up with the girl at the same time. उसने छाया में चलने और साथ ही लड़की के साथ चलने की बहुत कोशिश की। She walked really fast. वह बहुत तेज़ चल रही थी। How far away was the food? खाना कितनी दूर था?

After almost an hour of walking, they stopped in front of a big building. लगभग एक घंटे चलने के बाद, वे एक बड़ी इमारत के सामने रुके। Sri Rajarajeshwari Prasanna Kalyana Mandapam read Velu slowly. श्री राजराजेश्वरी प्रसन्ना कल्याण मंडपम ने वेलु को धीरे से पढ़ा। A sign with letters made of flowers said, Groom: J. V. Vinayagan, Bride: Rani. फूलों से बने अक्षरों वाले एक बोर्ड पर लिखा था, दूल्हाः जेवी विनयगन, दुल्हनः रानी। Velu stared at the big cars parked outside. वेलु ने बाहर खड़ी बड़ी कारों को देखा। One of the cars had a flower garland and roses taped onto it. एक कार पर फूलों की माला और गुलाब के फूल चिपके हुए थे। The girl looked around, लड़की ने इधर-उधर देखा, pulled one off quickly जल्दी से एक माला निकाली and stuck it in her hair. और उसे अपने बालों में लगा लिया।

“Come on,” she said. "चलो,” उसने कहा। “Are we going to eat here?” asked Velu, looking at the huge hall and the people inside.  "क्या हम यहीं खाना खाएँगे?" वेलु ने विशाल हॉल और अंदर मौजूद लोगों को देखते हुए पूछा।

“Hopes!” said the girl shaking her thumb under his nose. "आशा है!" लड़की ने नाक के नीचे अपना अंगूठा हिलाते हुए कहा। She led him behind the hall. वह उसे हॉल के पीछे ले गई। There was a big garbage bin overflowing with rubbish. वहाँ एक बड़ा कचरादान था जो कचरे से भरा हुआ था। Two goats were standing on the pile, fighting for a banana leaf. दो बकरियाँ ढेर पर खड़ी थीं, केले के पत्ते के लिए लड़ रही थीं। A cloud of flies buzzed around their legs. मक्खियों का एक बादल उनके पैरों के चारों ओर भिनभिना रहा था। There was a rotten smell in the air. हवा में सड़ांध की गंध थी। The girl picked up a squashy banana and held it out to Velu. लड़की ने एक कुरकुरा केला उठाया और उसे वेलु की ओर बढ़ाया।

“Here’s your food.” "यह आपका भोजन है।"

Velu was shocked. “Are we going to eat their leftovers?” वेलु चौंक गया। "क्या हम उनका बचा हुआ खाना खाएँगे?"

 “Chey! What do you think I am? A dog? "छि! तुम मुझे क्या समझती हो? कुत्ता?  I only take untouched food. मैं सिर्फ़ साफ़ खाना खाता हूँ। Here, some more, catch!” लो, थोड़ा और, पकड़ो!" She threw him a vada. उसने उसे एक वड़ा फेंका। Velu looked at it with distaste. वेलु ने उसे घृणा से देखा।

“Come on, hero, eat it!” चलो, हीरो, इसे खाओ! You think I like it? तुम्हें लगता है कि मुझे यह पसंद है? I told you I’ll find you something to eat. मैंने तुमसे कहा था कि मैं तुम्हारे लिए कुछ खाने को ढूँढूँगी । Don’t think I have money to buy food for you. ऐसा मत सोचो कि मेरे पास तुम्हारे लिए खाना खरीदने के लिए पैसे हैं। You’d better eat what you get until you have your own money.” जब तक तुम्हारे पास खुद के पैसे नहीं आ जाते, तब तक जो मिल जाए, उसे खा लो।

Velu hesitated, but his stomach squeezed him again. वेलू हिचकिचाया, लेकिन उसके पेट ने उसे फिर से दबा दिया। He gulped down the banana and vada. उसने केला और वड़ा निगल लिया। His stomach felt better immediately. उसका पेट तुरंत ठीक हो गया। He could have eaten at least ten times more, वह कम से कम दस गुना और खा सकता था, but the girl could find only one more banana which she ate herself. लेकिन लड़‌की को केवल एक और केला मिला जिसे उसने खुद खा लिया।

“It’s too early, they’ve only eaten tiffin.”अभी बहुत जल्दी है, उन्होंने सिर्फ़ टिफ़िन खाया है। If you’re still hungry, you’ll have to wait for them to finish lunch. अगर तुम अभी भी भूखे हो, तो तुम्हें उनके लंच खत्म होने तक इंतज़ार करना होगा। You can wait if you want. तुम चाहो तो इंतज़ार कर सकते हो। I have to work, I’m going.” मुझे काम करना है, मैं जा रही हूँ।" She picked up a couple of bottles from the heap and threw it into her sack. उसने ढेर से दो बोतलें उठाईं और उन्हें अपने बोरे में डाल लिया। Then she walked off. फिर वह चली गई।

Velu panicked. वेलू घबरा गया। He realised that उसे एहसास हुआ कि if the girl left him, अगर लड़की उसे छोड़‌कर चली गई, he had no idea. तो उसे पता नहीं चलेगा कि where he was and what to do वह कहाँ है और क्या करना है। It was better to stick to her, उसके साथ रहना ही बेहतर था, she seemed to know her way around. उसे लगता था कि वह अपना रास्ता जानती है। He ran after her again. वह फिर से उसके पीछे भागा।

“Aiy!” he called. "ऐ!" उसने पुकारा। He did not even know the girl’s name. उसे लड़की का नाम भी नहीं पता था। “Aiy, what is your name?” he asked hurrying behind her. "ओय!, तुम्हारा नाम क्या है?" उसने जल्दी से उसके पीछे जाकर पूछा।

She stopped and turned around. “Oho! So you’ve been following me around without even knowing my name. Jaya.” वह रुकी और पीछे मुड़ी। "ओहो! तो तुम मेरा नाम जाने बिना ही मेरे पीछे-पीछे घूम रहे थे। जया।

“I’m not following you.” “What then? Who got you food?” "मैं तुम्हारा पीछा नहीं कर रहा हूँ।" "फिर क्या? तुम्हारे लिए खाना किसने लाया?"

“Can I come with you? Where are you going?” "क्या मैं आपके साथ आ सकता हूँ? आप कहाँ जा रहे हैं?"

“Come if you want. This bag is full, I have to go home to get another one.” "अगर तुम चाहो तो आ जाओ। यह बैग भर गया है, मुझे दूसरा लेने के लिए घर जाना है।"

PART-III                  CHILDREN AT WORK

Ø There is a row of huts near some dirty puddles. कुछ गंदे पोखरों के पास झोपड़ियों की एक पंक्ति है।

Ø Outside one of the huts, Jaya dumps her sack.  एक झोपड़ी के बाहर जया अपनी बोरी फेंकती है।

Ø Grateful to his friend, Velu thinks of the days ahead. अपने मित्र के प्रति कृतज्ञ वेलु आने वाले दिनों के बारे में सोचता है।

Jaya and Velu walked along the roads for half an hour, जया और वेलू आधे घंटे तक सड़क पर चलते रहे, until they came to a bridge across a dirty trickle of water. जब तक कि वे गंदे पानी के ऊपर बने पुल पर नहीं पहुँच गए। “We are in Triplicane now. "हम अब ट्रिप्लीकेन में हैं। See, that’s Buckingham Canal,” said Jaya. देखिए, यह बकिंघम नहर है," जया ने कहा।

Velu stared. वेलू ने घूरकर देखा। This was a canal? यह नहर थी? Near some puddles of water was a row of the strangest huts पानी के कुछ गट्टों के पास एक कतार में सबसे अजीबोगरीब झोपड़ियाँ थीं he had ever seen. जो उसने कभी देखी थीं। They were built out of all sorts of things — metal sheets, tyres, bricks, wood and plastic. वे सभी तरह की चीज़ों से बनी थीं धातु की चादरें, टायर, ईंटें, लकड़ी और प्लास्टिक। They stood crookedly and looked as if they would fall any moment. वे टेढ़ी-मेढ़ी खड़ी थीं और ऐसा लग रहा था जैसे वे किसी भी पल गिर जाएँगी।

“Is this where you live? These houses are strange!” said Velu. "क्या तुम यहीं रहती हो? ये घर अजीब हैं!" वेलू ने कहा। “In our village, the houses are made of mud and palm leaves.” "हमारे गांव में घर मिट्टी और ताड़ के पत्तों से बने होते हैं।"

Jaya went around to one of the huts and dumped her sack outside. जया एक झोपड़ी के पास गई और अपना बोरा बाहर फेंक दिया। Then she picked up an empty one. फिर उसने एक खाली बोरा उठाया।

“Let’s go.” "आओ चलें।"

 She turned to Velu and gave him a shove. वह वेलू की ओर मुड़ी और उसे धक्का दिया। “At least help me now. "अब तो मेरी मदद करो। Here, wear these and come with me.” लो, ये पहनो और मेरे साथ आओ।"

She threw him a pair of old shoes without laces and pushed a sack and a stick into his hands. उसने उसे विना फीते के पुराने जूते थमा दिए और उसके हाथ में एक बोरी और एक छड़ी थमा दी। Velu was confused. वेलू उलझन में था। What work did she want him to do with these things? वह चाहती थी कि वह इन चीज़ों से क्या काम करवाए? The only work he had ever done was on the landowner’s farm, weeding  उसने अब तक सिर्फ़ ज़मींदार के खेत में घास-फूस साफ करने and taking cows out to graze. और गायों को चराने का काम ही किया था।

“Are there any farms in the city?” he asked Jaya. "क्या शहर में कोई खेत हैं?" उसने जया से पूछा।

She laughed and thumped her stick on the ground. वह हँसी और अपनी छड़ी ज़मीन पर पटक दी। “Farms! There are no farmers here. "खेतः यहाँ कोई किसान नहीं है। We are ragpickers.” हम कूड़ा बीनने वाले हैं।"

“Ragpickers?” "कचरा बीनने वाले?"

“See my sack? Full of things I collected.” "मेरी बोरी देखियेः मेरी इकट्ठी की हुई चीजों से भरी हुई।"

“Collected? From where?” asked Velu. "इकट्ठा किया? कहाँ से?" वेलु ने पूछा।

“From rubbish bins, where else?” -कचरे के डिब्बे से, और कहाँ से?"

“You collect rubbish?” Velu had never heard of such a thing "तुम कूड़ा-कचरा इकट्ठा करते हो?" वेलू ने ऐसी बात कभी नहीं सुनी थी.

Velu was puzzled. वेलू हैरान था। He had heard of people throwing away rubbish. उसने लोगों को कूड़ा फेंकते हुए सुना था। But why would anyone want to buy rubbish? लेकिन कोई कूड़ा क्यों खरीदना चाहेगा?
