WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (1564-1616), the greatest playwright and poet in English literature, was the third of eight children born to a glove maker in Stratford-on-Avon in England. He received little formal education. At eighteen, he married Anne Hathway and soon moved to London. Within a few years, he was well known as a leading actor and playwright. His great tragedies include Hamlet (1602), Othello (1604), King Lear (1605), and Macbeth (1606). He wrote 154 sonnets. Some of them are addressed to an attractive young man, (the Earl of Southampton whom the poet urges to marry); others to the mysterious dark lady. A love triangle- two men to a woman - is suggested in a number of sonnets. 'Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind' is about man's ingratitude. The cold winter wind does not cause so much suffering as a man's ingratitude.

Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind

Blow, blow, thou winter wind
Thou art not so unkind
As man's ingratitude
Thy tooth is not so keen
Because thou art not seen
Although thy breath be rude

जितनी मनुष्य की कृतघ्नता
तेरे दांत इतने तीखे नहीं
क्योंकि तू दिखाई नहीं देता
यद्यपि तेरी सांस उदण्ड है

Heigh-ho! sing heigh-ho! unto the green holly;
Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly:

हे हो ! गाओ, हे हो ! इस हरे जंगल में;
अधिकांश मित्रता में कपट है
 अधिकांश प्रेम मात्र मूर्खता !

Then heigh-ho! the holly!
this life is most jolly.
Freeze, freeze, thou bitter sky
Thou does not bite so nigh
As benefits forgot
Though thou the waters warp
Thy sting is not so sharp
As friend remember'd not

Heigh-ho! sing heigh-ho! unto the green holly:
Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly.

हे हो ! गाओ हे हो ! इस हरे जंगल में
अधिकांश मित्रता में कपट है, अधिकांश प्रेम मात्र मूर्खता

         Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind

SUMMARY :

'Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind' is taken from William Shakespeare's famous play 'As You Like it.'

The elder brother is punished by his younger brother Duke Frederick.

He goes to forest of Arden along with large number of his faithful followers from his country.

This song is sung by Amiens one of the lords who follows the Duke to his punishment.

This story is sung to distract the old Duke's mind from his badly discomforts and to cheers him up in his misfortune.

Amiens asks the winter wind to blow hard. He wants to tell that in gratitude of man is more painful than the cold winter wind.

The cold winter wind is painful no doubt but on ungrateful man is more painful.

Ingratitude gives more trouble. The cold winter wind does not sting so acutely as an ungrateful man does.

He wants to tell that life in the forest among green trees is much better than the life in the court.

In this world friendship is just show and showing love is foolishness. It is better to live a life here where everyone is friendly to us.

He tells the better style be so called that water turns into ice.

Even then it does not bite so much as a friend forgets all The benefits given to him.

Although the winter wind changes even the usual natural shapes of the sea water it does not give us so much pain as friend forgets us.

This song is intended to pleasure the old Duke who is exposed to the cold winter wind and living shelter less in the forest of Arden.
