I was in class IV मैं वर्ग चार में था when I gave my first stage performance in my school तब अपने विद्यालय में, मैं पहलीवार रंगमंच पर अभिनय किया. The name of the play was 'Shrawan Kumar' नाटक का नाम " श्रवण कुमार" था, and I was playing the character of Shrawan Kumar और मैं श्रवण कुमार कि भूमिका निभा रहा था. The director was a student of class IX निर्देशक वर्ग 9 का विद्यार्थी था. Two boys played the role of the blind parents of Shrawan Kumar दो लड़के श्रवण कुमार के बूढ़े माता पिता की भूमिका निभा रहे थे. They had been instructed उन्हें निर्देश दिया गया था to keep their eyes closed उनकी आंखों को बंद all the time पूरा वक्त and to sit together साथ में बैठने को in the centre of the stage रंगमंच के बीच में, facing the audience दर्शकों की ओर चेहरा करके. The curtain rose. परदा उठा, On hearing the command of the blind parents अंधे माता पिता के आदेश सुनकर "Beta Shrawan Kumar, we are very thirsty" बेटा श्रवण कुमार , हमलोग बहुत प्यासे हैं- I took a lota, मैने लोटा लिया touched their feet उनकी पैर छुआ and walked towards the river नदी की ओर चल पड़ा. King Dasharath, entered the stage from behind the curtain पर्दे के पीछे से राजा दशरथ रंगमंच पर आए. He moved about and twisted his moustache. वे अपने मूछों पर ताव देते हुए चल रहे थे, On hearing some sound, कुछ आवाज़ सुनकर , he took out an arrow from the quiver on his back अपने पीठ पर के से तीर निकाले and exclaimed और आश्चर्य से "Which animal is polluting the river water?" कौन सा जानवर नदी के पानी को गंदा कर रहा है?
I saw the arrow going straight towards the roof मैने छत की ओर सीधे एक तीर को जाते हुए देखा and I fell flat on the stage और मैं सीधा मंच पर गिर गया and started crying: कराहना शुरू कर दिया।
O cruel! what harm had I done to you? अरे! निर्दयी , मैंने तुम्हारा क्या बिगाड़ा था?
Why did you strike the arrow in my bosom? तुमने मेरे छाती पर तीर क्यों मारा?
What wrong after all had I done to you? आख़िर मैंने कौन सी भूल की थी?
Wretched! You shot me while fetching water. अरे! नीच! तुमने मुझे मारा जब मैं पानी भर रहा था।
The high pitch of my voice मेरी आवाज़ की उच्च लय stunned the audience in the hall हॉल के दर्शकों को मंत्रमुग्ध कर दिया. I kept singing uninterruptedly मैं बिना रुके गाता रहा but the song was so long लेकिन गीत इतना लम्बा था that it seemed there was no end कि ऐसा प्रतीत हो रहा था कि उसका अंत ही नहीं था. Meanwhile इसी बीच, king Dasharath stood still like a statue राजा दशरथ भी मूर्ति कि तरह खड़े थे with one leg in front and another at the back एक पैर आगे एवं दूसरा पैर पीछे करके. He was waiting for me वे मेरा इंतजार कर रहे थे to complete my song, मेरे गीत के समाप्ति की, his bow facing me. उनका धनुष मेरे चेहरे की ओर था। If he had shot another arrow from his quiver, यदि वे अपनी तरकस से दूसरा तीर चलाते , it would have corrected his earlier mistake तो वे अपनी प्रारंभिक गलती को सुधार लेते but the director had instructed him लेकिन निर्देशक ने निर्देश दिया था कि to shoot only one arrow केवल एक तीर ही चलाने को which he had already done. जो पहले ही हो चूका था।
I had hardly sung half the song मैं मुश्किल से आधा गीत को गाया था when my voice went hoarse तब मेरी आवाज़ फट गई. I could see the audience laughing. मैं दर्शकों को हंसते हुए देख सका था।
The blind parents of Shrawan Kumar श्रवण कुमार के जो अंधे माता पिता थे were finding it difficult to keep their eyes closed वे अपनी आंखों को बंद करने में कठिनाई महसूस कर रहे थे. Sometimes one and sometimes the other कभी पहला तो कभी दूसरा would open their eyes अपनी आंखों को खोल रहे थे. On seeing this यह देख कर, the audience started giggling दर्शक चिढ़ाना and remarked और दिखना शुरू कर दिए, "See, he has again opened his eyes देखो उसने फिर से अपनी आंखों को खोल दिया है."Suddenly the audience burst out laughing अचानक दर्शकों में हँसी फूट पड़ा, when they saw the "Pallu"of the saree falling down from the head of Bodhraj who was playing the role of Shrawan Kumar's blind mother.
The shaven head of Bodhraj became visible. After a while when one of the parents of Shrawan Kumar was seen opening his eyes, somebody in the audience shouted:"Look, look again, he can see".
बोधराज का मुंडा सिर दिखाई देने लगा। थोड़ी देर बाद जब श्रवण कुमार के माता-पिता में से एक को अपनी आँखें खोलते हुए देखा गया, तो दर्शकों में से कोई चिल्लाया: "देखो, फिर से देखो, वह देख सकता है"।
Time and again laughter arose in the hall and noise of clapping could be heard. Then I stopped singing and acted as if dying in pain. The hall applauded with clapping. One teacher of my class who was part of the audience told my brother Bal Raj "Look, what your brother is doing?"
हॉल में बार-बार हँसी आती थी और ताली की आवाज़ सुनाई देती थी। फिर मैंने गाना बंद कर दिया और ऐसा अभिनय किया जैसे दर्द में मर रहा हो। हॉल ने ताली बजाकर ताली बजाई। मेरी कक्षा के एक शिक्षक जो दर्शकों का हिस्सा थे, ने मेरे भाई बाल राज से कहा, "देखो, तुम्हारा भाई क्या कर रहा है?"
After my death as Shrawan Kumar, a few more dialogues had to follow, King Dasharath speaking to my old parents and the old parents cursing the king. But I forgot everything and at once got up. The audience burst into peels of laughter. Somebody taunted, "Keep lying, keep lying." But I got so confused that I didn't know what to do. I again lay down. This led to clapping which didn't seem to end. Whistling, clapping and laughter and different sorts of sounds continued for long time to come.
श्रवण कुमार के रूप में मेरी मृत्यु के बाद, कुछ और संवादों का पालन करना पड़ा, राजा दशरथ ने मेरे बूढ़े माता-पिता और राजा को कोसते हुए बूढ़े माता-पिता से बात की। लेकिन मैं सब कुछ भूल गया और तुरंत उठ गया। दर्शक ठहाके मारकर हंस पड़े। किसी ने ताना मारा, "झूठ बोलते रहो, झूठ बोलते रहो।" लेकिन मैं इतना भ्रमित हो गया कि समझ नहीं आ रहा था कि क्या करूं। मैं फिर लेट गया। इससे ताली बजाई गई जो खत्म होने का नाम नहीं ले रही थी। सीटी बजाना, ताली बजाना और हँसी और तरह-तरह की आवाज़ें आने वाले लंबे समय तक चलती रहीं।
This was my first role in life. यह मेरे जीवन का पहला अभिनय था।
