                                                  USED TO 

Used to + Verb infinitive refers to a habit or state in the past.                  

It is used only in the Past Simple Tense.

Past Habits:- 

If you used to do something, you did it for a period of time in the past but you don’t do any more.

We used to live there when I was a child.

I used to walk to school every day when I was a child.

Past States: -

We also say used to express a state that existed in the past but doesn’t exist now. States are not actions. We express states with static verb such as have, believe, know, and like.

Example: 

                I used to like the Beatles, but now I never listen to them.

                He used to have long hair, but now it’s very short.

                 I used to believe in magic when I was a child.

                I didn’t use to like wine, but now I love it.

                Did he use to work in your office?

Structure:

       Affirmative:           S+ Used to + V1 +O…

       Negative :              S + didn’t + use to + V1+ O.

       Interrogative:   

                 Did/Didn’t +S+ use to+ V1+ O ?

                                         Or 

        Wh - word+ Did/Didn’t +S+ use to+ V1+ O?

Example:01

1. राम धूम्रपान करते थे। 
Ram used to smoke.

2.मैं रोज सुबह टहलने जाता था। 
I used to walk in the morning every day.

3. हम रोज शाम को मैदान में खेलते थे।
We used to play in the field every evening.

4. राम धूम्रपान नहीं करते थे।
Ram didn’t used to smoke.

 5.    मै सुबह में नहीं टहला करता था। 
I didn’t use to walk in the morning.

6. हमलोग प्रत्येक शाम को क्रिकेट नहीं खेला करते थे। 
We didn’t use to play in the field every evening.

7. क्या राम धूम्रपान करता था?
Did Ram use to smoke?

8. क्या राम सुबह में टहलता था?
Didn’t Ram use to walk in the morning?

9. राम सुबह में क्यों नहीं टहलता था?
Why didn’t Ram use to walk in the morning?

10. जब वह छोटी थी तब वह एक लंबी दूरी की धावक हुआ करती थी।
She used to be a long distance runner when she was younger.

11. मुझे नींद नहीं आती थी, लेकिन फिर मैंने योग करना शुरू कर दिया और यह वास्तव में मेरी मदद करता है।
I didn’t use to sleep very well but then I started doing yoga and  it  really helps me.

12. क्या आप एक बच्चे के रूप में यहां आते थे?   
  Did you used to come here as a child?

Translate in to Hindi

1. I used to play cricket.
मैं क्रिकेट खेलने का आदत था।

2. She used to live in Delhi.
वह दिल्ली में रहती थी।

 

3. We used to visit our grandparents.
हम अपने दादा-दादी से मिलने जाया करते थे।

4. He used to read books.
वह किताबें पढ़ने का शौकीन था।

5. They used to travel together.
वे साथ में यात्रा किया करते थे।

6. I used to eat breakfast at 7 am.
मैं ७ बजे नाश्ता करता था।

7. She used to sing beautifully.
वह खूबसूरती से गाती थी।

8. We used to play football.
हम फुटबॉल खेलते थे।

9. He used to wake up early.
वह जल्दी उठता था।

10. They used to watch movies.
वे फिल्में देखते थे।

11. I used to love reading novels.
मुझे उपन्यास पढ़ने का शौक था।

12. She used to teach English.
वह अंग्रेजी पढ़ाती थी।

13. We used to go to the beach.
हम समुद्र तट पर जाते थे।

14. He used to play the guitar.
वह गिटार बजाता था।

15. They used to have dinner together.
वे साथ में रात का खाना खाते थे।

16. I used to live in a small village.
मैं एक छोटे से गाँव में रहता था।

17. She used to write stories.
वह कहानियाँ लिखती थी।

18. We used to go on picnics.
हम पिकनिक पर जाते थे।

19. He used to be a good dancer.
वह एक अच्छा नर्तक था।

20. They used to visit museums.
वे संग्रहालयों में जाते थे।
