14. She Lived Her Dream

Such women are everywhere in our country from north to south and from east to west. भारत में महिलाएं निश्चित रूप से आगे बढ़ रही हैं। वे न केवल स्वतंत्र हो रहे हैं बल्कि समाज में सकारात्मक बदलाव लाने का भी प्रयास कर रहे हैं। ऐसी महिलाएं हमारे देश में उत्तर से दक्षिण तक और पूर्व से पश्चिम तक हर जगह हैं। 1. The whole world was excited as Kalpana Chawla was to return from the space. People were planning to celebrate her return on February 2003, but the return never happened, as the 'Columbia Shuttle' broke apart, just 16 minutes before it was to land in Florida. Many hoped for a miracle. Alas! Kalpana died after spending a month in the space, travelling over 6.5 million miles in space and in 252 orbits. She nonetheless lived her dream. कल्पना चावला के अंतरिक्ष से लौटने को लेकर पूरी दुनिया उत्साहित थी। लोग फरवरी 2003 को उनकी वापसी का जश्न मनाने की योजना बना रहे थे, लेकिन वापसी कभी नहीं हुई, क्योंकि 'कोलंबिया शटल' फ्लोरिडा में उतरने से ठीक 16 मिनट पहले टूट गई। बहुतों को चमत्कार की उम्मीद थी। काश! अंतरिक्ष में एक महीना बिताने, अंतरिक्ष में 6.5 मिलियन मील और 252 कक्षाओं में यात्रा करने के बाद कल्पना की मृत्यु हो गई। वह फिर भी अपने सपने को जी ली थी। Kalpana Chawla was born in a small town Karnal in Haryana, in a traditional middle class family. The youngest of four children, Kalpana studied at Tagore School, but was different from other children. Her love for the skies and space began when she was a little girl in Haryana. Her school projects and papers were about stars, planets and the outer space. Teachers often found her sketching airplanes instead of playing with her friends. While her businessman father supported her when she joined the flying club, he was shocked when she chose flying as a career. He wanted her to become a doctor. Kalpana managed to win over her father and her family to become Punjab Engineering College's first woman aeronautical engineer in 1982. कल्पना चावला का जन्म हरियाणा के एक छोटे से शहर करनाल में एक पारंपरिक मध्यमवर्गीय परिवार में हुआ था। चार बच्चों में सबसे छोटी कल्पना टैगोर स्कूल में पढ़ती थी, लेकिन दूसरे बच्चों से अलग थी। आसमान और अंतरिक्ष के लिए उसका प्यार तब शुरू हुआ जब वह हरियाणा में एक छोटी लड़की थी। उसके स्कूल के प्रोजेक्ट और पेपर सितारों, ग्रहों और बाहरी अंतरिक्ष के बारे में थे। शिक्षक अक्सर उसे अपने दोस्तों के साथ खेलने के बजाय हवाई जहाज़ बनाते हुए पाते थे। जब वह फ्लाइंग क्लब में शामिल हुईं, तो उनके व्यवसायी पिता ने उनका समर्थन किया, लेकिन जब उन्होंने करियर के रूप में उड़ान को चुना तो उन्हें झटका लगा। वह चाहता था कि वह डॉक्टर बने। कल्पना 1982 में पंजाब इंजीनियरिंग कॉलेज की पहली महिला वैमानिकी इंजीनियर बनने के लिए अपने पिता और अपने परिवार का दिल जीतने में कामयाब रहीं। Her parents wanted her to get married and settle down. So, they strongly opposed her when she wanted to go to the US for postgraduate studies. Kalpana won again. She got her Master's degree from the University of Texas, Arlington and a Doctorate from the University of Colorado. It was there that she met her husband, French flying instructor and aviation writer, Jean-Pierre Harrison. उसके माता-पिता चाहते थे कि वो शादी करके घर बसा ले। इसलिए, जब वह स्नातकोत्तर अध्ययन के लिए अमेरिका जाना चाहती थी, तो उन्होंने उसका कड़ा विरोध किया। कल्पना फिर जीत गईं। उन्होंने टेक्सास विश्वविद्यालय, आर्लिंगटन से मास्टर डिग्री और कोलोराडो विश्वविद्यालय से डॉक्टरेट की उपाधि प्राप्त की। यह वहाँ था कि वह अपने पति, फ्रांसीसी उड़ान प्रशिक्षक और विमानन लेखक, जीन-पियरे हैरिसन से मिलीं। After doing her Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering in 1988, she worked as a research scientist at NASA, Ames Research Centre, California. She became one of the 19 persons selected from 2062 applicants to become an astronaut. It took her only 90 minutes to circle the earth! Kalpana and her husband loved aerial aerobatics, hiking, backpacking and reading. 19 नवंबर 1997 को, उसने पंद्रह दिनों के लिए अमेरिकी अंतरिक्ष यान में अपनी पहली उड़ान भरी। उसे पृथ्वी का चक्कर लगाने में केवल 90 मिनट लगे! कल्पना और उनके पति को हवाई कलाबाजी, लंबी पैदल यात्रा, बैकपैकिंग और पढ़ना बहुत पसंद था।  Though she accepted American citizenship, Kalpana didn't forget her home. Every year she paid for the trip of two talented children from her town to visit NASA. She paid for the education of many girls, too. The government of Tamil Nadu instituted the Kalpana Chawla Award to be given annually on the Independence Day for her bravery and service. Now Kalpana is no more but her achievements shall continue to inspire people to work hard to realise their dream. हालांकि उसने अमेरिकी नागरिकता स्वीकार कर ली, लेकिन कल्पना अपना घर नहीं भूली। हर साल उसने अपने शहर के दो प्रतिभाशाली बच्चों को नासा देखने के लिए यात्रा के लिए भुगतान किया। उन्होंने कई लड़कियों की शिक्षा के लिए भी भुगतान किया। तमिलनाडु सरकार ने उनकी बहादुरी और सेवा के लिए स्वतंत्रता दिवस पर प्रतिवर्ष दिए जाने वाले कल्पना चावला पुरस्कार की स्थापना की। अब कल्पना नहीं रहीं, लेकिन उनकी उपलब्धियां लोगों को अपने सपने को साकार करने के लिए कड़ी मेहनत करने के लिए प्रेरित करती रहेंगी।
