Mahua is a small village on the bank of the Punpun River. महुआ पुनपुन नदी के किनारे एक छोटा सा गाँव है। There lived a poor widow, Her name was Sita वहाँ एक गरीब
विधवा रहती थी, उसका नाम सीता था।. She had only one son named Ratan उसका एक ही
बेटा था जिसका नाम रतन था।. Sita was
very poor, But she loved her son very much, सीता बहुत गरीब थी, लेकिन वह अपने
बेटे से बहुत प्यार करती थी। She
wanted him to study and become a great man. वह चाहती थी कि वह पढ़-लिखकर बड़ा आदमी बने। She used to
work as a housemaid and grow vegetables in her backyard to pay for her son's
studies. वह अपने बेटे
की पढ़ाई का खर्च उठाने के लिए घर में नौकरानी का काम करती थी और अपने पिछवाड़े
में सब्जियाँ उगाती थी। It was
a hard work, but she never complained. यह बहुत कठिन
काम था, लेकिन उसने कभी शिकायत नहीं की।
Unfortunately, Ratan was never interested in his studies. दुर्भाग्य से, रतन की पढ़ाई में कभी रुचि नहीं रही। He left
school midway. उन्होंने बीच
में ही स्कूल छोड़ दिया.Sita was
very sad. सीता बहुत दुखी
हुईं. She had some silver bangles. उसके पास कुछ चाँदी की चूड़ियाँ थीं। She sold
them and opened a small shop for Ratan. उसने उन्हें बेच दिया और रतन के लिए एक छोटी सी दुकान खोली।
Ratan was good at business and sold many things of general use. रतन व्यवसाय में अच्छा था और सामान्य उपयोग की कई चीजें बेचता था। Gradually,
he was able to save some money. धीरे-धीरे, वह कुछ पैसे बचाने में सक्षम हो गया। When Sita saw that his business had grown, she got him
married, जब सीता ने
देखा कि उनका व्यवसाय बढ़ गया है तो उसने उसका विवाह कर लिया, Ratan was
very happy with his wife, Bela. रतन अपनी बेला पत्नी के साथ बहुत खुश था ।
But he started neglecting his mother, Sita helped Bela with
cooking, washing and other household work. लेकिन वह अपनी मां की उपेक्षा करने लगा, सीता खाना पकाने, कपड़े धोने और अन्य
घरेलू कामों में बेला की मदद करती थी। After a year
Bela gave birth to a son. एक साल बाद
बेला ने एक बेटे को जन्म दिया। Sita was very happy to have a grandson. पोते को पाकर सीता बहुत प्रसन्न हुईं। She doted on
the child and sang many songs to him everyday. वह बच्चे से बहुत प्यार करती थी और हर दिन उसके लिए कई गाने गाती
थी। But Sita's health began
to fall day by day. Ratan had no time for her. लेकिन सीता का
स्वास्थ्य दिन-ब-दिन गिरने लगा। रतन के पास उसके लिए समय नहीं था।
He did not take her to any doctor. वह उसे किसी डॉक्टर के पास नहीं ले गया. Once, it
rained heavily. एक बार बहुत
तेज बारिश हुई.The water of
the Punpun River entered the village. पुनपुन नदी का पानी गांव में घुस गया The flood washed away many animals, trees and houses. बाढ़ कई जानवरों, पेड़ों और घरों को बहा ले गई। The people
were forced to leave the village. लोगों को गांव छोड़ने पर मजबूर होना पड़ा. Ratan's
house was on high land, but it was surrounded by water. रतन का घर ऊँची
ज़मीन पर था, लेकिन चारों ओर से पानी से घिरा हुआ था। His shop was damaged and the roof of his house leaked. उनकी दुकान क्षतिग्रस्त हो गई और उनके घर की छत लीक हो गई। After his
marriage, उसकी शादी के बाद, Ratan had
given Sita a small cot outside the house to sleep रतन ने सीता को सोने के लिए घर के बाहर एक छोटी सी खाट दी थी and he lived
inside with his wife. और वह अपनी
पत्नी के साथ अंदर रहता था।
One night when he came back to his house, he found Sita
shivering and coughing, but he remained silent. एक रात जब वह अपने घर वापस आया तो उसने सीता को कांपती और खांसती
हुई पाया, लेकिन वह चुप रहा। He went
inside his small room and found that Bela was sleeping with the child in her
arms. वह अपने छोटे से कमरे में गया
और देखा कि बेला बच्चे को गोद में लेकर सो रही थी। The bed was
wet. बिस्तर गीला था. Suddenly it
thundered and it began to rain. अचानक बादल गरजे और बारिश होने लगी.The roof leaked and the child started crying. छत टपक गई और बच्चा रोने लगा. Bela got up
and covered the child with her sari. बेला उठी और अपनी साड़ी से बच्चे को ढक दिया।
Her clothes were wet. उसके कपड़े गीले थे.Ratan had a strange feeling. रतन को एक अजीब सा एहसास हुआ। He was moved deeply to see this sight. यह दृश्य देखकर वह अत्यंत द्रवित हो गये। This
reminded him of his childhood days. इससे उन्हें अपने बचपन के दिन याद आ गये। He instantly
went to his mother. वह तुरन्त अपनी
माँ के पास गया।
"Maa! Please forgive me. "माँ! कृपया
मुझे क्षमा करें। I've been very unkind to you. मैंने आपके प्रति बहुत निर्दयी व्यवहार किया। I forgot my
duty. मैं अपना कर्तव्य भूल गया। I don't know
what to say." मुझे नहीं पता
कि क्या कहूँ।" Ratan said sobbing. रतन ने सिसकते हुए कहा।
On hearing Ratan's voice, Bela came out on to the Verandah. रतन की आवाज सुनकर बेला बाहर बरामदे में आ गई। She saw Ratan in Sita's arms. उसने रतन को सीता की गोद में देखा। Both were
weeping. Sita said, "Don't cry my child. दोनों रो रहे थे. सीता ने कहा, "मत रो मेरे
बच्चे। How can a mother be angry with her own son? एक माँ अपने ही बेटे से कैसे नाराज़ हो सकती है? You have all
my blessings and love." मेरा सारा आशीर्वाद और प्यार तुम्हारे साथ है।"
At this, Bela's eyes were also filled with tears. बेला की आंखों में भी आंसू आ गए She went near them and sat down. इस पर वह उनके पास जाकर बैठ गयी It was a happy family reunion.. यह एक खुशहाल पारिवारिक पुनर्मिलन था।

D.1. Determiners
Read the following sentences from the lesson :

Mark the use of ‘a’, ‘her’ and ‘some’ in the sentences given
above. These words determine or specify the meaning of the words (noun) which
they precede. Such words are called determiners. In other words, a determiner is a word that comes before a noun
and shows its limits.
Examples:
a, an, the, two, both, this, that, my, your,
some, any, each, every, little, few, many, much, a lot of etc.
‘Some’ is normally used in affirmative
sentence; ‘any’ in negatives and questions.

‘Few’, ‘a few’ and ‘the few’ are used with
countable nouns.
‘Few’ means not ‘a bit’.
‘A few’ means ‘some’,
‘the few’ means ‘whatsoever
is’.
‘We made few mistakes’ means ‘We made not many mistakes”.
‘We made a few mistakes’
means ‘We made some mistakes.’
‘We were punished for the few mistakes we
made’ means the number of mistakes was not very large but whatever it was, we
were punished for it.

All the students of the class may play this
game at a time. Write any long word like, ‘POSTMAN’ on the black board and ask the
students to write down all the words they can make with the letters of the
given word-such as pot, mat, stamp, stop etc. Each letter should be used only
once in a word. The student who makes more words is the winner.
