The book is written by Germaine Greer, a well-known feminist writer in Australia.यह पुस्तक ऑस्ट्रेलिया की एक प्रसिद्ध नारीवादी लेखिका जर्मेन ग्रीर द्वारा लिखी गई है।

In this essay, she elaborates on the cultural peculiarities of child and parent relations in the countries of East and West.इस निबंध में, उन्होंने पूर्व और पश्चिम के देशों में बच्चे और माता-पिता के संबंधों की सांस्कृतिक विशिष्टताओं को विस्तार से व्यक्त किया है।

Different cultures and traditions exist in different parts of the world regarding childbirth

Germaine Greer also mentions the belief, that women do not become members of their husband’s family until they have given birth to a child.

In some countries, a pregnant woman has to go to her mother’s home to deliver her baby.

She has to stay there for at least three months.

Childbirth is not a family affair and is a celebration for the neighborhood.

When the child is seven days old, new clothes are brought for both the child and its mother.

These methods are collectively and culturally accepted.

Such rituals are associated with the feeling of motherhood, but going through these traditions, giving birth to a child at home would also increase maternal mortality.इस प्रकार के अनुष्ठानों के साथ मातृत्व की भावना जुड़ी हुई होती हैं लेकिन इन परंपराओं से गुजरना, घर में ही बच्चे को जन्म देने से मातृ मृत्यु दर में भी बढ़ोत्तरी होती थी।

These days the whole process of childbirth has become mechanical.इन दिनों बच्चे के जन्म की पूरी प्रक्रिया यांत्रिक हो गई है

In our anxiety to avoid death, we have destroyed the importance of experiencing the entire process that a mother used to do.मृत्यु से बचने की हमारी चिंता में हमने उस पूरी प्रक्रिया के अनुभव के महत्व को नष्ट कर दिया है, जो एक माँ करती थी।

It reduces maternal mortality but snatches away the emotional pleasure of becoming a mother from a woman.

“A Child is Born” is written by the world-famous feminist Australia writer named Germaine Greer. In this prose, Germaine Greer describes many differences between a traditional and modern society in the matters of pregnancy and how to celebrate the birth of the child in both societies?

A pregnant woman of the traditional society in the west does not feel herself alone while she is pregnant because in western society the pregnant mom gets too much respect by her family members and other people. In traditional western society, mom is called by the name of her first child after childbirth. The newly born infant is taken care of by all the members of society.

So, at last, the permission is given by the boy’s mom to go to her mother’s house for the last months of her pregnancy and about the first three months of the baby’s life for better care. So western society are respected and praised too much for their such courage. In traditional western society, the childbirth is celebrated as a ceremony. Many people attend this party with some gifts to see the child and to congratulate that mom.

While In modern western society, pregnant woman has to take care of herself under the guidance of nurses and doctors. In west child is only born to fulfil the needs of parents. So the modern western pregnant woman has to bear all the pains during childbirth and child-rearing.

There is no such system in modern western society. So, we can say that western society is far better than western modern society in the matter of childbirth and child care.
