Ans. - No. The speaker is not afraid of death.
Q.2 If at all he dies in the battle, how would he like to
be remembered?
Ans. – He wants to be remembered as a part of England.
Q.3 How can some comer of a foreign field 'be' "for ever
England?"
Ans. - Physical existence of the poet is made out of the
English soil. If he dies in the foreign land he will be buried
under the foreign land. Thus the graveyard under which,
the poet would be buried would be forever England.
Q.4 "In that rich earth a richer dust concealed." What
does 'dust' stand for?
Ans. Here ‘dust’ refers to the body of the poet, which is
made of the soil of England.

mind'?
Ans. - The phrase 'A pulse in the eternal mind' indicates a
wave of thoughts which remind the poet of his homeland.

Q.1 Do you think that the title of the poem is
appropriate? Give reasons.
Ans. Yes, the title of this poem is perfect, because this
poem completely elaborates the mental condition of a
'soldier'. Every line of this poem is dedicated to the
thoughts of a soldier who is going to a battle. He talks
about his country, his people, friends, his villages and
everything.
Q.2 Discuss the main ideas contained in the first eight
lines, i.e. Octave.
Ans. – In the first eight line of the poem, everything
revolves around the thoughts of a soldier who is in a war
field. These line depict that what does a soldier think when
he fights for his country. In these lines the speaker has
expressed his emotions and love for his country, and says how
he will glorify his country even after death by being
buried in a faraway country and making it a part of
England.
Q.3 – What do you understand by patriotism? Is this a
patriotic poem? Discuss.
Ans – Patriotism is our willingness to sacrifice something
for our nation. It can be anything. Some fight battles for
their country while some work for making the lives of its
people better. Patriotism is one’s emotion for his/her
country and by being channelized by it, one dedicates
oneself in improving the situation by willing to sacrifice
something.
Yes, this is a patriotic poem because the speaker is willing
to sacrifice his life for his country.
Q.5 – How many time does the poet use ‘England’ or
‘English’ in the poem? What does it show?
Ans. – Overall he has use ‘England ’ three times and
‘English’ two times in this poem. It shows that this poem is
completely centred around his country and he is
emphasizing it by using it again and again. There can be
another point of view that nothing is more beautiful to a
soldier than the name of his own country, perhaps that’s
why the speaker has used these two words again and
again.
Q.6 How can you show that you love your country?
Ans. There is no course or certification that can measure if
someone loves his country or not. Still there are certain
codes of conduct which reflect our emotions for our
country. Being a law abiding citizen and trying not to hurt
anyone by any means can be a good gesture of patriotism.
Q.7 What is a Sonnet? Comment on the language of the
prescribed poem. Also mention its rhyme scheme
Ans. - A Sonnet is a poem containing 14 lines. The
language of the prescribed poem is very beautiful and
easy to understand.
It has been divided into two parts which are
- The first eight lines are called Octave and the second
six lines are called Sestet.
