 JOHN DONNE (1572-1631), the pioneer of a new kind of lyrical and satirical verse called 'Metaphysical', was born in London into a prosperous Roman Catholic family of traders at a time when England was staunchly anti-Catholic.

आध्यात्मिक  कही जाने वाली गेयात्मक एवं हास्यात्मक कविता के एक नए शैली की खोज करने वाले JOHN DONNE (1572-1631) का जन्म लंदन के एक सम्पन्न कैथोलिक परिवार में उस समय हुआ जब इंग्लैंड कैथोलिक विरोधी विचारधारा वाला देश था।

 Donne was forced to leave Oxford University without a degree because of his religion.

Donne को उनके धर्म के कारण बिना डिग्री के ही ऑक्सफोर्ड यूनिवर्सिटी छोड़ने के लिए बाध्य होना पड़ा।

 He studied law, and read theology उन्होंने कानून की पढ़ाई की तथा अध्यात्म का अध्ययन किया।.

 He also participated in two Naval expeditions and became secretary to a powerful noble, a job he lost when he was briefly sent to prison for secretly marrying his patron's niece.

 उन्होंने दो नौसेना यात्रा अभियानों में भाग लिया तथा प्रभावशाली एवं अच्छी, सचिव की नौकरी प्राप्त की जिसे उन्हें उस समय छोड़ना पड़ा जब उन्हें अपने आश्रयदाता की भतीजी से चोरी-छिपे शादी करने के कारण कुछ समय तक जेल जाना पड़ा।

In 1615, at the age of 42, Donne accepted ordination in the Anglican Church and soon became one of the greatest preachers of his time. 

1615 में, 42 वर्ष की आयु में Donne ने Anglican चर्च में पादरी का पद स्वीकार किया तथा शीघ्र ही अपने समय के महानतम उपदेशक बन गए।

In love lyricism, Donne broke completely with the Petrarchan tradition, introducing an intellectual and colloquial tone. 

गेय-काव्य के प्रति अपने प्रेम में Donne ने पुरानी परंपराओं को पूर्णतया तोड़ दिया तथा एक बौद्धिक एवं सामान्य बोलचाल-योग्य स्वर का परिचय करवाया।

His love poems use the latest discoveries of science and geography to hammer home a point and combine passion with verbal and intellectual 'teasing. उनकी प्रणय कविताएँ किसी बिन्दु पर जोर देने हेतु नवीनतम वैज्ञानिक एवं भौगोलिक खोजों का इस्तेमाल करती हैं तथा शाब्दिक एवं बौद्धिक पीड़ा के साथ उत्कण्ठा के भावों का समावेश करती हैं।

Donne is well known for his Songs and Sonnets, Satires and the Elegies and Sermons.

Donne अपनी रचनाओं Songs and Sonnets, Satires and the Elegies तथा Sermons के लिए जाने जाते हैं। Genuine poetic feelings, harsh metres, strained and whimsical images characterise all his poetic creations.

  वास्तविक काव्यात्मक संवेदनाएँ, रूक्ष छन्द तथा अव्यवस्थित या चंचल चित्र उनकी समस्त काव्य रचनाओं की मुख्य विशेषताएँ हैं।
