A teacher by
profession, is basically a poet. पेशे से शिक्षक मूलतः एक कवि
हैं His plays appear like an
extension of his poetry. The poet in him shows through his short crisp and
pithy lines and the song of chorus in his play his first book of Rajasthani
plays published in the late seventies was receipt rather in differently in the
Rajasthani literary circles. Till that time drama in Rajasthani had meant
either some stray one act plays on social issues like widow remarriage
dowry etc. Or the fall place based on historical and mythological
theme up full-length play on a contemporary theme was beyond conjecture,
however' Arjun's arrival on the scene is significant not only in in term
of dramatic literature but also of modern theatre.
Arjun Dev's
plays include " Do Naatak Aaj Ra, Guwari, and Sankario, Bol Mhari
Machchali Kittok Paani, Dharm Juddha and Mugati Ghatha.
'Dharm Juddha' is
the story of Padma young girl educated through scriptures like the Ramayana the
Mahabharata etc.
She feels
aggrieved and agitated by the uncharitably orthodox attitude of society towards
women. She repeatedly questions her parents and her teacher about the rights
and the identity of a woman and ask them whether her identity is subject to her
marriage.

Padma: Mother, what is the identity of a woman? (मां, एक औरत कि पहचान क्या है?
Mother: Why do you ask
that? (तुम ऐसा क्यों पूछती हो?)
Padma: How am I different from other? ( मै दूसरों से अलग कैसे हूँ?
Mother: You are my
daughter तुम मेरी पुत्री हो and our only
child और हमारी एकलौती संतान हो and your father’s darling. और अपने पिता की लाडली हो।
Padma: Father cares more for money than for me. पिता जी मुझसे ज्यादा पैसे पर ध्यान देते हैं/ प्यार करते है. It takes a heart to bestow love. प्यार कि उत्पत्ति तो हृदय/ दिल से होती है।
Mother: For whom does he
save? वे किसके लिए बचाते है, He does all this only for your shake. वे ये सब मात्र तुम्हारे लिए करते है, You should not think that I have no heart. तुम्हें कदापि नही सोचना चाहिए कि हमारे पास दिल नही है।
Padma: But I did not say it of you. लेकिन मैं आपसे ऐ नहीं कह रही हूं।
Mother: I am not any way
different from him. मैं किसी भी तरह उनसे अलग नही हूं, My identity is linked with his मेरी पहचान उनसे जुड़ी हुई है, and I cherish the bond. और मैं एक मधुर बंधन से।
[Padma’s father enters] पदमा के पिताजी प्रवेश करते हैं।
Father: What is the talk about the bond, Padma’s mother? पदमा की मां, किस बंधन के बारे में चर्चा हो रही है?
Mother: Here is your
father लो ये तुम्हरे पिताजी है. Ask him whatever you want to know. उनसे पूछ लो जो कुछ भी पूछना चाहती हो।
Father: What is it, my child? यह क्या है मेरी बेटी?
Mother: She wants to know
what the identity of a woman is. वह जानना चाहती हैं कि एक औरत कि पहचान क्या है?
Father: You will know it, dear, when you are married. मेरी प्यारी बच्ची ये सब विवाह के बाद जान जाओगी.
Padma: Does marriage lend identity to a woman? क्या शादी औरत को पहचान देता है?
Mother: What a woman
without a husband? पति के बिना एक औरत क्या है?
Padma: What if one does not get married? अगर कोई शादी नहीं करता है तो क्या होगा?
Mother: Why do you ask
such a senseless question? तुम ऐसा बेहूदा सवाल क्यों पूछती हो?
Padma: What about a woman whose husband is dead? उस महिला के बारे में क्या जिसका पति मर चुका है?
Mother: Life is hell for
her. जीवन उसके लिए नरक है।
Padma: That’s injustice! यह तो अन्याय है!
Mother: You needn’t talk
of justice and injustice here. तुम्हे यहां न्याय और अन्याय की बात करने की जरूरत नहीं है।
Padma: Why? क्यों?
Mother: Over here woman
don’t have right to ask questions. यहां महिलाओं को सवाल पूछने का अधिकार नहीं है।
Padma: What right do they have then? फिर उनका क्या अधिकार है?
Father: Rights are for equals, dear. अधिकार बराबर हैं, प्रिय।
Padma: Why is home considered a place for bargaining? घर को सौदेबाजी का स्थान क्यों माना जाता है? One shouldn’t live such a place किसी को भी ऐसी जगह नहीं रहना चाहिए.
Father: You will get the same replies to these questions wherever you
go. तुम जहां भी जाओगी इन सवालों के वही जवाब आपको मिलेंगे।
Padma: But the identity of a woman is the identity of the
human race. A society sans woman ….लेकिन नारी की पहचान ही मानव जाति की पहचान है। एक समाज बिना औरत….
Father: That’s why they say that marriage lends this identity. ऐसा वे क्यों कहते हैं कि शादी इस पहचान को उधार देती है।
Padma: So, if a girl does not get married, she has no identity! तो अगर कोई लड़की शादी नहीं करती है तो उसकी कोई पहचान नहीं है! Why is it that unmarried man is venerated an called a saint. ऐसा क्यों है कि अविवाहित पुरुष को संत कहा जाता है while an unmarried woman is called immoral and wanton? जबकि अविवाहित महिला को अनैतिक और प्रचंड कहा जाता है?
Summary:
This story of ‘Dharm Juddha’ has been written by
Mr. Arjun Dev Charan, a teacher by profession. The story rendered in dialogue
form revolves round a young girl. Her name is Padma. Padma had little schooling
and the education she got, was thought ancient scripture like the Ramayana and
the Mahabharata etc. but as she grows and gains wisdom, she feels aggrieved
about the position of a women in the society. Sometimes she questions her
teacher and her parents about the identity of a woman and her rights. She asks,
“Does a woman gain status only through marriage?”
