Time and Tense

Tense may be defined as the form of the verb which indicates the time and the state of action or events. Tense को क्रिया के उस रूप के रूप में परिभाषित किया जा सकता है जो समय और क्रिया या घटनाओं की स्थिति को इंगित करता है। In other words we can say that tense is the study of the form of the verb. दूसरे शब्दों में हम कह सकते हैं कि काल क्रिया के रूप का अध्ययन है।

Tense denotes

(A) Time of an action/event.

For example:--

a.  He goes to school. (Present time of action.)

b.  He went to school. (past time of action)

c.  He will go to school. (future time of action)

From the above sentences, it is clear that there are three main tenses.

(I)                     Present Tense
(II)                     Past Tense
(III)                   Future Tense

(B) State of an action/Progress of Action or event.

(i)                          I write a letter regularly. (Simple Present tense)
(ii)                       I am writing a letter. (Present Continuous tense)
(iii)                    I have written a letter. (Present Perfect tense)
(iv)                     I have been writing a letter for some time. (Present perfect continuous tense)

These sentences show the state of an action.

For example:-

Ø In sentence (i) the action mentioned denotes habit/practice.

Ø In sentence (ii) the action mentioned is still in progress at the time of speaking.

Ø In sentence (iii) the action referred to is described as complete or perfect.

Ø In sentence (IV) the action is continuing from the past into the present.

Time and Tense:

Time and Tense are two different words. Time is a non-grammatical term. It is free from the language and grammar. Time shows the exact time of action. But tense is a fully grammatical term. It is not free from language and grammar. Tense shows the form of verb. 

The tense also gives a sense of time to work, but sometimes not.

Time और Tense दो अलग-अलग शब्द हैं। समय एक गैर-व्याकरणिक शब्द है। यह भाषा और व्याकरण से मुक्त है। समय action का सही समय दिखाता है।लेकिन Tense पूर्ण रूप से व्याकरणिक शब्द है। यह भाषा और व्याकरण से मुक्त नहीं है। Tense क्रिया के रूप को दर्शाता है। Tense भी काम करने का समय देता है, लेकिन कभी-कभी नहीं।

Kinds of Tense

There are three types of Tense

A. Present Tense
B.  Past Tense
C.  Future Tense

On the basis of the stage of progress or completeness of the action represented by the verb, Tenses can further be categorized into four parts as aspects:--

1.   Simple /Indefinite
2.   Continuous
3.   Perfect
4.   Imperfect/ Perfect Continuous

BEFORE READ

Unlike The Ant and the Cricket (page 21), which tells a story, this is a nature poem. — "दी एंट एंड द क्रिकेट" (पृष्ठ 21) की तरह नहीं, जो एक कहानी बताती है, यह एक प्रकृति पर आधारित कविता है। In it, the grasshopper and cricket do not appear as characters in a story. — इसमें टिड्डा और झींगुर कहानी के पात्रों के रूप में नहीं आते। Rather, they act as symbols, each suggesting something else. — बल्कि वे प्रतीकों की तरह कार्य करते हैं, जो कुछ और संकेत करते हैं। Read the poem and notice how ‘the poetry of earth’ keeps on through summer and winter in a never-ending song. — कविता पढ़ो और देखो कि कैसे 'धरती की कविता' गर्मी और सर्दी में एक अनंत गीत के रूप में चलती रहती है। Who sings the song? — यह गीत कौन गाता है?

ON THE GRASSHOPPER AND CRICKET

The poetry of earth is never dead:
धरती की कविता कभी मृत नहीं होती।
When all the birds are faint with the hot sun,
 जब सभी पक्षी गर्म सूरज से थक जाते हैं,
And hide in cooling trees, a voice will run
और ठंडी छाया वाले पेड़ों में छिप जाते हैं, तब एक आवाज़ दौड़ती है
From hedge to hedge about the new-mown mead,
झाड़ियों से झाड़ियों तक, ताज़ा कटे हुए घास के मैदान में।
That is the grasshopper’s — he takes the lead
वह आवाज़ टिड्डे की होती है — वह नेतृत्व करता है।
In summer luxury — he has never done
गर्मी की विलासिता में — वह कभी थमता नहीं।
With his delights, for when tired out with fun
 अपनी खुशियों में, क्योंकि जब वह खेल-कूद से थक जाता है,
He rests at ease beneath some pleasant weed.
तो वह किसी सुखद घास के नीचे आराम करता है।

The poetry of earth is ceasing never:
 धरती की कविता कभी बंद नहीं होती।
On a lone winter evening when the frost
एक अकेली सर्द शाम को जब ठंडक
Has wrought a silence, from the stone there shrills
 एक सन्नाटा पैदा करती है, तब पत्थर से एक तीखी आवाज़ आती है
The cricket’s song, in warmth increasing ever,
 झींगुर का गीत, जो गर्माहट को बढ़ाता है।
And seems to one in drowsiness half lost;
और किसी ऊंघते हुए व्यक्ति को ऐसा लगता है
The grasshopper’s among some grassy hills.
जैसे टिड्डा किसी घास से ढकी पहाड़ियों में हो।

The bandage was wound around the wound.

The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.

The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.

When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.

The insurance was invalid for the invalid.

They were too close to the door to close it.

There is no time like the present to present the present.
