Degree of Comparison

 Adverb और  Adjective की तीन Degrees होती है. 

(1 ) Positive Degree 
(2) Comparative  Degree and 
(3) Superlative Degree.

Rule 1. (A) Positive Degree अधिकतर so ........  as, Such ..... as  , as........ as के बीच आती है। 

Negative Sentence में प्रायः so + positive degree + as  ,

Affirmative Sentenceमें प्रायः  as + Positive Degree + as  का प्रयोग होता   है।   

            (B ) Comparative Degree के बाद  than  आना चाहिए।  
                    He is wiser than Ram.
             (C) Superlative Degree  के पहले ' the' का प्रयोग होता है।  
                Ram is the best boy of this class. 

Rule 2 : जो Adjective लम्बे  अर्थात दो या दो से अधिक syllables के होते है जैसे :-beautiful, intelligent, useful etc ,
Comparative Degree बनाने के लिए more  तथा Superlative Degree बनाने के के लिए  most का प्रयोग करते है।  

Rule 3:- यदि तुलना दो वस्तुओं या व्यक्तियों हो  तो उस दशा में केवल Positive तथा Comparative Degree में ही परिवर्तन संभव है। 
         वह Sentence , Superlative डिग्री में change नहीं किया जा सकता है।   

Interchange of Positive to Comparative
 (जब तुलना दो व्यक्तियों या वस्तुओं के बीच किया जाय तब )

 1. Positive Degree    - I am not so wiser as he.
    Comparative        - He is wiser than I.

2. Positive Degree    - Ram Walks as fast as Mohan.
    Comparative        - Mohan does not walk faster than Ram.

1. as.......as / so ...... as को हटा है। 

2. Adjective/Adverb को  Comparative में बदल  देते है। उसके बाद than लिखें।

3. यदि वाक्य Affirmative हो तो Negative में बदल देते है  और Negative में होतो Affirmative बना  . 

4 . वाक्य के दूसरे भाग को नए वाक्य में पहले तथा पहले  भाग को अंत में लिखें।  जैसा ऊपर के वाक्यों किया गया है।

Positive Degree                                Comparative Sentence

1. He is as good as Ram.               Comprative:    Ram is not better than he.
2. He is not good as Shyam.         Comprative    Shyam is better than he.
3. I am as tall as you.                    Comprative:   You are not taller than I.
4 . Sima is as beautiful as Rima.  Comprative:    Rima is not more beautiful than Sima.

Inter change  Comparative to Positive 

1. Comparative degree के Adjective को  positive में बदले। 

2. Adjectiveको  as....as /so...... as के बीच में रखे।  

3. Adjective के बाद प्रयुक्त than को हटा दे। 

4. यदि वाक्य Affirmative हो तो Negative में बदल देते है  और Negative में होतो Affirmative बना  दें।  

5.  वाक्य के दूसरे भाग को नए वाक्य में पहले तथा पहले  भाग को अंत में लिखें।

Example :
1. 
You are duller than I .(positive)
        I am not as dull as you.

2. Sita is more intelligent than Girta. (positive )
        Girta is not as intelligent as Sita.

3. A dog runs faster than cat. (positive)
        A cat does not run as fast as a dog.

4. He does not read more carefully than I do.(positive)
            I read as carefully as he does.

5. I know him as well as you do. (comparative)
            You do not know him better than I do.

INTERCHANGE OF POSITIVE, COMPARATIVE AND SUPERLATIVE DEGREE.






1. Milton is the greatest English poet. (Comparative)
    Milton is greater than any other English poet. (Positive)
    No other English poet is as great as Milton.

2. He is the best student of the class.

3. Mumbai is the busiest port in India.

4. Mount Everest is the highest peak of the world.

5. Greenland is the largest Iceland  in the world.

6. Sima is the tallest girl of my class.

7. New York is the greatest seaport in the world.

8. Bhim was the strongest man.

9. Gold is the most valuable metal. 

10. This is the finest watch.

1. England is  one of the richest countries in the world.
    England is richer than most other countries in the world.
    Very few countries in the world are as rich as England. 

2. Gold is one of the costliest metals.

3. The Tajmahal is one of the most beautiful buildings.

4. The Kashmir Valley is one of  the most beautiful place on the earth.

5. Mohan is one of the best boy of my school.

6. Akbar was one of the greatest emperors.

7. He is one of my best friends.

8. Patna is the one of the biggest town.

9. This is the one of the best school of this town.

10. India is the one of the poorest country.


Uses of "Gerund ".

 A Gerund is a verbal noun , it is formed by adding -ing, to the end of the first form of the verb.

As. A noun it is used in various ways:

A) A Gerund can be used as a Subject.

As: Swimming is a good exercise.

     Smoking is injurious to health.

    Walking is good for health.

    Telling a lie is a sin.

    Learning English is easy. 

    Walking is a good exercise. 

    Smoking is bad habit. 

    Walking in the morning is useful for health. 

     Running a shop is not easy. 

 Sleeping is necessary to life. 

Singing is an art. 

B) A Gerund can be used as an Object.

As: I like painting.

       She hates smoking.

      I know swimming.

      He enjoyed drinking. 

My job is teaching. 

Her hobby is reading. 

I dislike talking to an impudent person. 

He denied having hand in  her murder. 

      I know driving.

Ram stopped working. 

My father doesn't enjoy going to a doctor. 

I like swimming in the river. 

I like watching cricket. 

Flying planes is not an easy job. 

I don't like waiting here for an hour. 

Seeing is believing. देखकर ही विश्वास किया जा सकता है।

Mohan is fond of eating. 

He assisted me in doing this work. 

C) A Gerund can also be used after Preposition.

As: He stopped me from smoking.

      Supriya is used to reading  at night. 

     Shyam is used to working at night. 

      She helped me in doing this work. 

       He saved me from drowning.

      She was punished for coming late.

       I was punished for smoking.

      My friend is fond of swimming. 

       On reaching home, he wrote a letter to me.

       After taking dinner, he went to his home .

    Mohan is fond of eating.


D) A Gerund is used as a compliment of a Sentence.

    His  bad habit is gambling.

    Saloni's hobby is reading.

   My job is teaching.

   And your job is reading.

 My good habit is walking in the morning.

   E) A Gerund is used as a Apposition of a noun

उसका विचार,  ग्रामीणों को संगठित करना, प्रशंसनीय हैं। 

His view, uniting the villagers, is praiseworthy.

तुम्हारा अपराध, एक पुलिस ऑफिसर तथा उसके परिवार की हत्या करना, जधन्य है। 

Your crime, killing a police officer and his family, is heinous. 

F) Gerund can be used after possissive adjectives. 

You should not mind her coming late. 

He postponed his wife's going to Delhi. 

I appreciate Mahi's dancing. 

She doesn't approve of her husband's working as a clerk.
