It might take me a long time to find the fawn, if he’s wandered. Leave me off

“All right, but you take it easy now.
You know north here, and east?” "ठीक है, पर अब तुम आराम

“There, and there. That tall pine makes a bearing.” “So long.” “लो, और लो। वह ऊँचा चीड़ का पेड़ दिशा दिखाता है।” “अलविदा।”
“So
long, Mill-wheel. I’m obliged.” “अलविदा, मिल-व्हील। मैं

He waited for the sound of the hooves
to end, then cut to the right. उसने घोड़ों के
खुरों की आवाज़ बंद होने का इंतज़ार किया, फिर दाईं ओर मुड़ गया। The scrub was
still. झाड़ियाँ शांत थीं। Only his own
crackling of twigs sounded across the silence. सन्नाटे के पार

for an instant if he had mistaken his direction. एक पल के लिए
उसे लगा कि कहीं उसने अपनी दिशा तो नहीं भूल ली है।
Then a buzzard rose in front of him
and flapped into the air. तभी एक गिद्ध उसके सामने आया और
हवा में पंख फड़फड़ाने लगा। He came into
the clearing under the oaks. वह ओक के पेड़ों के नीचे खुले
मैदान में आ गया। Buzzards
sat in a circle around the carcass of the doe. गिद्ध हिरणी के
शव के चारों ओर घेरा बनाकर बैठ गए। They turned their heads on their long
scrawny necks and hissed at him. उन्होंने अपनी
लंबी, दुबली गर्दनों पर
सिर फेरा और उस पर फुफकारने लगे। He threw his bough at them and they
flew into an adjacent tree. उसने अपनी टहनी उन पर फेंकी और

clacked their wings, impatient to return to their business. गिद्ध अपने पंख
फड़फड़ा रहे थे, अपने काम पर
लौटने के लिए बेचैन।
He
returned to the spot where the fawn had emerged and dropped on all fours,
studying the sand for the small hoof prints. वह उस जगह पर लौट आया जहाँ से हिरन का बच्चा निकला था और चारों पैरों पर गिरकर
रेत पर छोटे-छोटे खुरों के निशान ढूँढ़ने लगा। The
night’s rain had washed away all tracks except those of cat and buzzards. रात की बारिश ने बिल्ली और गिद्ध के पैरों के निशानों को छोड़कर बाकी सभी
निशान धो दिए थे।
