ABOUT THE POET 

Walter De La Mare was born in 1873 and died in 1956. Walter De La Mare का जन्म 1873 में हुआ था और 1956 में उनकी मृत्यु हो गई। He was a well-known poet, novelist and short story-writer of 20th century. वे 20 वीं शताब्दी के एक प्रसिद्ध कवि, उपन्यासकार और लघु कथाकार थे। Queen Elizabeth-II honoured him with the Order of Merit in 1953. महारानी Elizabeth-II ने उन्हें 1953 में Order of Merit से सम्मानित किया। He shows his genius by evincing fresh interest in old themes. वे पुराने विषयों में नई रुचि दिखाकर अपनी प्रतिभा दिखाते हैं। The note of melancholy runs through his poems. उदासी का सुर उनकी कविताओं में चलता है। “An Epitaph" is a short poem composed by Walter De La Mare. An Epitaph" Walter de la Mare  द्वारा रचित एक छोटी कविता है। Here deals with the beauty of an old woman who is no more. यहां एक बूढ़ी औरत की सुंदरता से संबंधित है जो अब नहीं है। What is the remarkable in the poem? कविता में उल्लेखनीय क्या है? Is its melancholy tone and simplicity of diction? क्या इसका उदासीन स्वर और उच्चारण की सादगी है?

ENGLISH TO HINDI: "An Epitaph" |Walter de la Mare – Bihar Board 12th | 100 Marks English | by:-Sunil Sir 

Here lies a most beautiful lady.
Light of step and heart was she;
I think she was the most beautiful lady
That ever was in the West Country.

अर्थ :- कवि कहता है कि यहाँ (कब्र में) सबसे खूबसूरत औरत लेटी हुई है। उसकी चाल बहुत हल्की है तथा इसी प्रकार उसका दिल भी बहुत सुन्दर है।मेरे ख्याल से वह सबसे खूबसूरत औरत थी जो कभी पश्चिमी देश में रहा करती थी।

Word Meaning: Epitaph: किसी मृतक के याद में बनाया गया मकबरा, Lies: कब्र में आराम करना, most: अत्यधिक, Lady:महिला, Light of Step and Heart: घुमंतू और हंसमुख , West Country: पश्चिम देश.

Explanation: 

In these lines, the poet is indicating a certain grave, and says that in this grave a most beautiful ❤ woman is laying.

इन पंक्तियों में कवि  एक खास कब्र कि ओर इशारा करते हुए कहता है कि  इस कब्र में  एक अति सुंदर महिला को दफनाया गया है. He further adds that she had the habit of moving here and there and had soft heart. कवि आगे  कहता है कि वह महिला  चारों ओर घुमाने वाली तथा  साफ दिल  थी. According to poet, she was the most beautiful woman of Europe in her time. कवि के अनुसार, वह अपने समय में  यूरोप कि सबसे सुन्दर महिला थी . 

But beauty vanishes; beauty passes,
However, rare- rare it be; And when I crumble, who will remember
This lady of the West Country?   

अर्थ :- लेकिन अब उसकी खूबसूरती गायब हो जाती है, वह खूबसूरती कहीं चली जाती है। यह बहुत ही दुर्लभ होता है कि खूबसूरती को लोगों के द्वारा हमेशा याद किया जाता है। कवि कहता है कि जब मैं मरूँगा, मुझे कौन याद करेगा। उसी प्रकार इस मरी हुई खूबसूरत औरत को भी कौन याद करेगा अर्थात् सब उसे भूल जाएँगे।

Word Meaning: Beauty:सुन्दरता, Vanishes:गायब/लुप्त हो जाता है, Passes: गुजरते हैं, However:हालाँकि, Rare: दुर्लभ, Crumble: गिरकर टुकड़ों में ढहना, Remember: याद करना .

Explanation:

In these above lines, the poet says however rare beauty is, but vanish with the passage of time. उपरोक्त पंक्तियों में कवि कहता है कि  सुन्दरता कितना भी  अनुपम क्यों  न हो , लेकिन समय के साथ वह समाप्त हो ही  जाता है. He afraid that after his death, no one will remember that woman of Europe who was must beautiful but she is now no more. कवि को डर है कि उसकी मृत्यु के बाद , यूरोप के उस महिला को कोई याद नहीं करेगा , जो बहुत सुंदर थी लेकिन वह अब नहीं है .( यानि मर गई )
