Letter-writing (पत्र-लेखन) एक कला
है। अभ्यास के द्वारा इसमें दक्षता प्राप्त की जा सकती है। आज के युग में पत्र
लेखन का अत्यधिक महत्व है।
एक अच्छे पत्र में निम्नलिखित विशेषताएँ होनी चाहिए:
1. भाषा स्पष्ट हो
ताकि अर्थ तुरन्त समझ में आ जाय।
2. विषय सामग्री
क्रमबद्ध हो ।
3. पत्र संक्षिप्त
होना चाहिए। अनावश्यक बातें नहीं हानी चाहिए ।
4. प्रत्येक बात के
लिए अलग-अलग अनुच्छेद (Paragraph) होना चाहिए।
5. काट-पीट नहीं
होनी चाहिए। सुलेख का ध्यान रखना चाहिए।
Kinds of Letters (पत्रों के प्रकार)
पत्र तीन प्रकार के होते हैं:
1. Personal Letter (निजी पत्र) जो अपने मित्रों
तथा सगे सम्बन्धियों को लिखे जाते हैं।
2. Official Letters (कार्यालयी पत्र) जो सरकारी अफसरों
को लिखे जाते हैं। इसके अन्तर्गत शिकायतें (complaints), प्रार्थना-पत्र (applications) तथा सम्पादक को
पत्र (letters to
editors) आदि आते हैं।
3. Business Letters
(व्यापारिक पत्र) जो पत्र व्यापारिक
प्रतिष्ठानों (Business firms) तथा ग्राहकों (customers) को लिखे जाते हैं।
1. PERSONAL LETTERS
निजी पत्र के निम्नलिखित भाग होते हैं:
1. Heading - निजी पत्र में अपना
पता तथा दिनांक दाहिनी ओर कोने (top right hand corner) में लिखे जाते हैं

2. The Salutation इसके अन्तर्गत लेखक
उन शब्दों को लिखता है जिनसे उसका और जिसे पत्र लिखा जा रहा है दोनों का सम्बन्ध
ज्ञात हो जाता है; जैसे-
(a) To a relative (सम्बन्धी को): My dear Father, My
dear Brother, and Dear Aunt आदि ।
(b) To a friend (मित्र को): My dear Ravi, Dear Mukesh.
3. The body of the letter यह पत्र का मुख्य भाग होता है।
इसे उपयुक्त अनुच्छेदों में बाँटकर लिखना चाहिये। भाषा सरल तथा रोचक होनी चाहिए।
4. The Subscription यह पत्र के दाहिनी ओर कान (right hand bottom
of the letter) में लिखा जाता है। इसके अन्तर्गत भी लेखक जिसे पत्र
लिख रहा है उससे अपने सम्बन्धों को ध्यान में रखकर उपयुक्त शब्दां का प्रयोग करता
है; जैसे-
(a) To a relative (सगे-सम्बन्धी को): Your affectionate son, Yours
affectionately, Your loving son, Your loving daughter. Your loving father.
(b) To a friend (मित्र को): Yours sincerely. Sincerely yours.
4. The signature of the writer अंत में दाहिनी ओर लेखक को अपने
हस्ताक्षर स्पष्ट करने चाहिए ताकि प्राप्त करने वाला समझ जाय कि पत्र किसने लिखा
है।
