Answer type Questions
Q.1 -
Give a summary of the poem.
Ans.
'Song of Myself' is a poem by Walt Whitman.
See
above summary.
Q.2 - What similarities does the poem draw between two human beings?
Ans. – Walt Whitman says that blood of all human beings is the
same. We are built of same atoms. So we all are similar and Thus If I can
celebrate my existence others should too.
Q.3 Explain the line 'Hoping to cease not till death'.
Ans. – The word ‘cease’ means ‘to stop’. The poet here is saying
that he has a hope not to stop until he dies. We all know that only if we keep
moving we may feel alive. So he says that he will march ahead and achieve new
goals until he dies, until he reaches the death.
Q.4 - Comment on the subjectivism (personal feeling) in the poem.
Ans. – In the poem ‘Song of Myself’, Title itself reflects the subjectivism
that the poet of this poem, Walt Whitman, is celebrating his existence. He says
that he has hundreds of reasons to celebrate his existence and live happily and
spend his life moving ahead. He doesn’t stop here and further he says that
others should also feel the same joy for life because all of us are made of same atoms and breathe same air.
So this poem is a great composition of personal feelings.
Q.5 - Why does the poet not want to bother himself with creeds'
and 'schools'?
Ans. - The poet finds that ‘creeds’ and ‘schools’ have limited
content of growth and anyone can never explore his horizons in full potential
being associated with them. These creeds and schools have their own perceptions
and teachings and they do not let an individual grow in full perfection. They
limit one’s belief and ideologies. So the poet does not bother himself with
‘creeds’ and ‘schools’.
Q.6 - What does the poet mean by "Nature without check with
original energy"?
Ans. – In the above line, the poet is saying that when it comes to
go with nature, he will never hesitate to go with it with his original energy,
because nature can never harm anybody. It nourishes us, it protects us, it
feeds us and we all are made of it. So we should always try to flow with it without
giving it a second thought with our full and original energy.
