About The Lesson|Bihar Board 12th | 100 Marks English  | By:-Sunil Sir
"Now the leaves are Falling Fast" is one of the finest lyrics of W. H. Auden.  Here he enacts the frustration inherent in human life, the aspirations that are not fulfilled and the sense of  loneliness in which every individual lives and dies.
In this poem the poet says that human beings are going to their graves very fast due to  diseases and some other reasons. During their life-span, their aspirations which are not fulfilled. As a result, the feelings of hopelessness has pervaded all around.
People show the feelings of fake love to one another.
Everywhere the messenger of death in different forms are present to pluck the human real happiness.
The people , who alive today, will die tomorrow. People are feared. They dare not to oppose the oppressor.
People have confined themselves. The sense of loneliness has entrapped them.
They live and die suffering from this very sense of loneliness. Death is at hand. Despite people may get consolation through watching the natural beauty.
Thus, moratality and continuity are the two wheels on which life runs. So,a man should be optimistic.

1. Now the leaves are Falling fast,
Nurse's flowers will not last;
Nurses to the graves are gone,
And the prams go rolling on.

Explanation:-In the first stanza of this poem the poet says that human are going to their graves very fast due to disease and some other reasons like the fast falling leaves. Nothing will last long. No perfect man on the earth to patronise and support the comming generation. People becoming hopeless and as their hopes are not fulfilled. ( Human feelings become worthless.) Despite of this life cycle will go on

 2. Whispering neighbours, left and right,

Pluck us from the real delight

And active hands must freeze

Lonely on the seperate knees.

Explanation:- In the secon stanza of this poem, the poet is frustrated by the behaviour of the selfish modern men.He further says that everywhere the agent or the messengers of death are present in different forms to take away the real pleasure. People show the feeling of fake love to one another. As a result, the feeling of hopelessness has pervaded all around. the world is going on which path is not understandable. The people who are live today will be die tomorrow. people have confined themselves. Everyone have been suffering from loneliness.

3.Dead in hundreds at the back,
Follow wooden in our track,
Arms raised stiffly to reprove
In false attitude of love.

Explanation:- In the third stanza of this poem the poet says that During the advancing the path of life the death bodies of hundreds of people in wooden coffins are seen. The dead people are going empty handed as if they were mocking (reproving) on the false attitude of human beings . perhaps they were saying that they were not taking anything from this world with themselves.

4. Starving through the leafless wood,
Trolls run scolding for their food;
And the nightingale is dumb,
And the angle will not come.

Explanation:- In the fourth stanza of this poem, the poet compares the lives of oldmen to the leavesless woods, and says starving wolves (disease, debility, helplessness etc.) searching for their prey. The gentle men dare not to oppose them. They are silent. Since the world has deteriorated too much, no angel will come to rescue them.

Hindi:-

5. Cold, impossible, ahead

Lists the mountain's lovely head

Whose white waterfall could bless

Travellers in their last distress.

Explaination:

In the last stanza of this poem the poet calls the men, travellers. He adds optimistically that for men who are in the last stage of life or whose death is at hand or who are completing their last journey, the sight of the lovely heads of the ranges of the mountain and its clean cold waterfalls though impossible and ahead will be like blessing. Thus , the poet is critical of the negative tendencies of modern man regarding old age, frustration in love, loneliness from the world and death and inspires to be optimistic.
