14. DAD AND THE
CAT AND THE TREE
Have you ever seen a cat
climbing a tree? क्या
आपने कभी बिल्ली को पेड़ पर चढ़ते देखा है?
Sometimes
a cat may climb too high and get stuck in the tree. कभी-कभी
बिल्ली बहुत ऊँचाई तक चढ़ जाती है और पेड़ पर फँस जाती है। The
poor thing can’t come down without help. वह बेचारी मदद के बिना नीचे नहीं
उतर सकती। How would you help it? आप उसकी
मदद कैसे करेंगे?
Surely,
not like Dad in the poem. निश्चित रूप से कविता में पापा की
तरह नहीं। Is Dad a good climber? क्या
पापा अच्छे चढ़ाई करने वाले हैं?
What were
his plans? उनकी
योजना क्या थी?

आज सुबह एक बिल्ली हमारे पेड़ में फँस गई।Dad said, “Right, just leave it to me.”
पापा बोले, “ठीक है, मुझे ही करने दो।”
The tree was wobbly, the tree was tall.
पेड़ हिल रहा था, पेड़ बहुत ऊँचा था।
Mum said, “For goodness’ sake don’t fall!”
मम्मी बोलीं, “भगवान के लिए गिरना मत!”
“Fall?” scoffed Dad, “A climber like me?
“गिरना?” पापा ने हँसते हुए कहा, “मेरे जैसा चढ़ाई करने वाला?”
Child’s play, this is! You wait and see.”
“ये तो बच्चों का खेल है! तुम देखना।”
He got out the ladder from the garden shed.
उन्होंने बगीचे की झोपड़ी से सीढ़ी निकाली।
It slipped. He landed in the flower bed.
वह फिसल गई। पापा फूलों की क्यारी में जा गिरे।
“कोई बात नहीं,”
पापा ने कहा।
rushing the dirt off his hair and his face and his trousers and
his shirt,
उन्होंने अपने बालों,
चेहरे, पैंट और शर्ट से
मिट्टी झाड़ी।
“We’ll try Plan B. Stand out of the way!”
“अब हम योजना बी
आज़माएंगे। रास्ते से हट जाओ!”
Mum said, “Don’t fall again, O.K.?”
मम्मी बोलीं,
“फिर से मत गिरना,
ठीक है?”
“Fall again?” said Dad. “Funny joke!”
“फिर से गिरना?”
पापा बोले। “मज़ाक
अच्छा है!”
Then he swung himself up on a branch. It broke.
फिर उन्होंने खुद को
एक डाल पर झुलाया। वह टूट गई।
Dad landed wallop back on the deck.
पापा धड़ाम से फिर से
फर्श पर आ गिरे।
Mum said, “Stop it, you’ll break your neck!”
मम्मी बोलीं,
“बस करो, तुम्हारी गर्दन टूट
जाएगी!”
“Rubbish!” said Dad. “Now we’ll try Plan C.
“बकवास!” पापा बोले।
“अब हम योजना सी आज़माएंगे।”
“मेरे जैसे चढ़ाई करने
वाले के लिए तो यह पलक झपकाने जितना आसान है!”
Then he climbed up high on the garden wall.
फिर वह बगीचे की
दीवार पर ऊँचाई तक चढ़ गया।
Guess what?
बताओ क्या हुआ?
He didn’t fall!
वह नहीं गिरा!
He gave a great leap
उसने एक ज़ोरदार
छलांग लगाई
And he landed flat
और वह सीधा आकर गिरा
In the crook of the tree-trunk —
पेड़ के तने की शाखा
के मोड़ पर —
Right on the cat!
ठीक बिल्ली के ऊपर!
The cat gave a yell
बिल्ली ने ज़ोर से
चिल्लाया
And sprang to the ground,
और ज़मीन पर कूद गई,
Pleased as Punch to be safe and sound.
बहुत खुश थी कि वह
सुरक्षित बच गई।
So it’s smiling and smirking,
अब वह मुस्कुरा रही
है और इतराकर देख रही है,
Smug as can be,
जितनी आत्मसंतुष्ट हो
सकती है उतनी,
But poor old Dad’s
लेकिन बेचारे बूढ़े
पापा
Still
अब भी
Stuck
फँसे हुए हैं
Up
ऊपर
The
उस
Tree!
पेड़ पर!
